What do you need to race F5D?

The good news you can get started for a lot less than people will tell you. Assuming you already have the radio you are looking at under £700 for a full race kit that you can fly at the next league event and kick all our butts.

Lets break that down and give some advice what is needed.

Models.

There are reviews of models else where on this site, so click here for that. In short, models come in to the UK at around £200-£250. The Nemesis or Jibe are as good as they get and both are available new or secondhand in the UK Via F5D UK.

The Jibe is faster than the Nemesis but both have recorded time in the mid 60's however you will find the Jibe not as easy to set up and fly however in the hands of an experienced pilot the Jibe is a real World Class machine.

If you are happy to spend that bit more from the same stable as the Nemesis comes the Demon, Current British Nationals & League Winner as well as Speed record-holder the Demons credentials needs no more comment. This Model will Probably be used by 2 of the 3 UK team in the forthcoming World Champs in Ukraine but again to get the performance there is some work to do so although ok for a beginner not necessarily essential.

Radio.

You will need a radio with rates. Ideally a computer type so you can have everything coupled onto one switch. You use high throws for take off and landings and low in race trim.

Keeping the weight to a minimum is always important and with some models the fuselage can be very tight on room, so a mini receiver is a good idea. We use Schultz, JR 770 spcm or multiplex mini IPD receivers. All work well and are happy in an electric pylon model. Make sure you put them at the back, as far away from the controller and motor as possible.

Servos again tend to be mini. The D60 in the wings and JR 381 on elevator seem popular although we have used them all and most seem ok as long as they do not have slop in the center.

Do not use BEC. If your speed controller has it I advise you to disable it and run a separate battery. I have found the 180 or 250 ma packs ideal and I have 2 so I can charge one whilst the other is in the plane and swap them over after 3 flights.
